Question (Istifta)

To: The Respected Chief Mufti (May Allah preserve him)

Subject: Regarding the Funeral Prayer (Salat al-Janazah).

Issue: In our society, it is often observed that people perform the funeral prayer (Janazah) without taking the deceased's body down from the vehicle (such as an ambulance or carrier).

Query: What I wish to know from the respected Chief Mufti is: Will the funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) be valid if it is performed while the body of the deceased remains inside a vehicle? Kindly provide the ruling along with Islamic legal evidence (Dalil). May Allah be your helper.

Answer (Al-Jawab)

Ruling: In the aforementioned scenario, performing the funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) while keeping the body of the deceased inside a vehicle is not valid (Sahih). This is because one of the essential conditions (Shart) for the validity of the funeral prayer in Islamic jurisprudence is that the body of the deceased must be placed on the ground directly in front of the Imam.
