Topic: Knowing Allah

(Translation and Tafsir of Selected Important Verses)

The Noble Verse

Simple Translation

Allah — there is no (true) deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. [1] Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Kursi [2] extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not tire Him. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
Surah: Al-Baqarah (The Cow) | Revealed in: Madinah | Verse: 255

Brief Tafsir

[1] This verse is called Ayat al-Kursi. Many of its virtues are established by authentic (sahih) hadiths. For example, it is the greatest verse of the Quran. Whoever recites it at night remains protected from Shaytan. Whoever recites it after every obligatory prayer, nothing stands between him and entering Paradise except death. (Ibn Kathir) It is a supremely great verse which, in concise words carrying vast meaning, comprises the glorious attributes of Allah, His lofty status, His might and His majesty.

[2] Regarding the meaning of 'Kursi', some said it is the place of Allah's Feet. Some said it means knowledge. Some said it means power and majesty. Some said it means dominion, and some said it is the Throne ('Arsh). However, the principle of the scholars of hadith and the righteous predecessors (Salaf as-Salih) concerning the attributes of Allah is to believe in them exactly as they are described in the Quran and Hadith, without distorting their meaning and without specifying their nature or form. Therefore, one must believe that it is a real Kursi, which is distinct from the Throne ('Arsh). We cannot describe what its nature and shape are, nor how Allah is established upon it. For its meaning is known to us, but its true nature is unknown to us.

The Noble Verse

Simple Translation

He is Allah, the Creator, the Originator, [1] the Fashioner. To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names. [2] Whatever is in the heavens and the earth declares His purity and glory. [3] And He is the Almighty, the All-Wise. [4]
Surah: Al-Hashr (The Gathering) | Revealed in: Madinah | Verse: 24

Brief Tafsir

[1] It is said that خلق 'Khalq' means to determine and measure according to His will, and برأ 'Bara'a' means to create it, shape it and bring it into existence.
[2] The discussion of 'Al-Asma' al-Husna' (the Most Beautiful Names) has been mentioned under Surah Al-A'raf 7:180.
[3] Both through the language of their state and through actual speech, as has been explained earlier.
[4] Whatever He decrees is never devoid of wisdom, purpose and insight.

The Noble Verse

Simple Translation

• Say, He is Allah, the One and Only.
• Allah is the Self-Sufficient (free of all needs).
• He has not begotten anyone, nor has anyone begotten Him.
• And there is none comparable to Him.
Surah: Al-Ikhlas (Sincerity) | Revealed in: Makkah | Verses: 1–4

Brief Tafsir

No one is equal to Him — not in His Essence, not in His Attributes, and not in His Actions. "There is nothing like unto Him." (Surah Ash-Shura 42:11)

In a Hadith Qudsi, Allah says: "Man reviles Me by saying that I have a child, whereas I am the One, the Self-Sufficient. I have neither begotten anyone nor been begotten by anyone, and there is none equal to Me." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Tafsir, chapter on the Tafsir of Surah Al-Ikhlas.)

This surah refutes the beliefs of those who believe in multiple deities, those who claim that Allah has a child, those who associate partners with Him, and those who deny the very existence of Allah.

The Noble Verse

Simple Translation

It is Allah who created you, then provided for you, then He will cause you to die, and then He will bring you back to life. Is there any among your (so-called) partners who can do any of these things? Glorified and Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him.
Surah: Ar-Rum (The Romans) | Revealed in: Makkah | Verse: 40

Brief Tafsir

From here, in order to make the polytheists understand, the flow of the discourse returns once again to the subjects of Tawhid and the Hereafter. [Aysar at-Tafasir]

That is: among the deities you have made, is any of them a creator or a provider? Is giving life and death within anyone's power? Or can any of them bring someone back to life after death? Then what do they actually do? Why have you taken them as objects of worship? [Tabari]

The Noble Verse

Simple Translation

He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, 'Be,' and it is. [1]
Surah: Al-Baqarah (The Cow) | Revealed in: Madinah | Verse: 117

Brief Tafsir

[1] That is, He is Allah, the (Creator and) Owner of everything in the heavens and the earth. Everything is obedient to Him. He alone created the heavens and the earth without any prior model. Moreover, for whatever He wills to do, the single word 'Kun' (Be) is sufficient for Him. How then could such an Exalted Being have any need for children? (Ahsanul Bayan)
