Topic: The Works of Allah

(Translation and Tafsir of Selected Important Verses)

The Noble Verse

Simple Translation

He who made the earth a bed for you and the sky a roof, and sends down water from the sky, then brings forth thereby various kinds of fruits as provision (rizq) for you.
Surah — Al-Baqarah | Revealed in — Madinah | Verse — 22 (first part)

The Noble Verse

Simple Translation

It is He who created for you [1] all that is on the earth; then He directed Himself [2] towards the heaven and fashioned it into seven heavens; [3] and He has full knowledge of all things.
Surah — Al-Baqarah | Revealed in — Madinah | Verse — 29

Brief Tafsir

(1) From this it is established that everything created on the earth is fundamentally lawful (halal), unless the prohibition of something is proven by evidence. (Fath al-Qadir)

(2) Some of the Salaf translated it as: "Then He rose over the heaven." (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Allah's rising over the Throne above the heavens, and His descending to the nearest heaven at particular times, are among His attributes. It is obligatory upon us to believe in them exactly as they are described in the Quran and Hadith, without any distortion of their meaning.

(3) From this, firstly, we learn that the heaven (sky) is a tangible and real entity. It is not merely height (outer space) that has been called the heaven.
Secondly, we learn that the heavens are seven in number. According to hadith, the distance between two heavens is a journey of five hundred years. And concerning the earth, the Noble Quran states:
{وَمِنَ الْأَرْضِ مِثْلَهُنَّ}
"And of the earth, the like of them." (At-Talaq 65:12)
From this we learn that the earths are also seven in number. This is further strengthened by a hadith of the Prophet (ﷺ), which states: "Whoever unjustly seizes even a hand-span of land, seven layers of earth will be hung around his neck on the Day of Resurrection." (Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 2959)
This verse also shows that the earth was created before the heavens. But in Surah An-Nazi'at 79:30, after mentioning the heaven, it says:
{وَالْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ دَحَاهاَ}
"And after that He spread out the earth."
This has been explained as follows: the earth was created first, but cleaning, levelling and spreading it out is a separate matter from its creation, and this was carried out after the creation of the heavens.
(Fath al-Qadir)

The Noble Verse

Simple Translation

Do you not know that to Allah alone belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth? And besides Allah, you have no protector and no helper.
Surah — Al-Baqarah | Revealed in — Madinah | Verse — 107

Brief Tafsir

That is, He is Allah, the (Creator and) Owner of everything in the heavens and the earth. Everything is obedient to Him. He alone created the heavens and the earth without any prior model. Moreover, for whatever He wills to do, the single word 'Kun' (Be) is sufficient for Him. How then could such an Exalted Being have any need for children?

The Noble Verse

Simple Translation

It is He who shapes you in the wombs however He wills. There is no deity (ilah) except Him, the Almighty, the All-Wise.
Surah — Al 'Imran | Revealed in — Madinah | Verse — 6

Brief Tafsir

When it is Allah alone who creates all the diversity in the mother's womb — beautiful or plain, boy or girl, fortunate or unfortunate, whole-bodied or with disability, and so on — how then can 'Isa (peace be upon him) be a deity (ilah)? He himself came into this world after passing through the various stages of creation. Allah carried out his creation too, in his mother's womb.

The Noble Verse

Simple Translation

You cause the night to enter the day and You cause the day to enter the night; [1] You bring forth the living from the dead and You bring forth the dead from the living; [2] and You give provision without measure to whom You will.
Surah — Al 'Imran | Revealed in — Madinah | Verse — 27

Brief Tafsir

[1] Causing the night to enter the day and the day to enter the night refers to the change of seasons. When the nights grow long, the days become short; and in another season, when the days grow long, the nights become short. That is, at times He inserts part of the night into the day and part of the day into the night, as a result of which the night and the day become shorter or longer.

[2] For example, the (lifeless) semen that comes out of a living human being, and then from that lifeless (semen) a living human being comes forth. Likewise, from a lifeless egg first comes a chicken, and then from a living chicken comes a (lifeless) egg; or a believer comes forth from a disbeliever and a disbeliever from a believer. Some narrations state that when Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) complained to the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) of having fallen into debt, he told him to recite the verse [اللَّهُمَّ مَالِكَ الْمُلْكِ] and then make this supplication:
Another narration states: "This is such a supplication that even if you had debt equal to Mount Uhud, Allah would arrange for it to be paid off for you." (Majma' az-Zawa'id 10/186; all the narrators of this hadith are reliable)

The Noble Verse

Simple Translation

Say: Whether you conceal what is in your hearts or reveal it, Allah knows it; and He knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And Allah has power over all things.
Surah — Al 'Imran | Revealed in — Madinah | Verse — 29

The Noble Verse

Simple Translation

All praise is for Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and made darkness and light. [1] Yet those who disbelieve set up equals to their Lord. [2]
Surah — Al-An'am | Revealed in — Makkah | Verse — 1

Brief Tafsir

[1] ظُلُمَات (darknesses) refers to the darkness of night, and نُور (light) to the light of day. Or it refers to the darkness of disbelief and the light of faith. 'Nur' (light) is used in the singular and 'Zulumat' (darknesses) in the plural, because the causes of darkness are many and its types are various.
On the other hand, 'Nur' (light) is mentioned as a genus (jins), which encompasses all its types within itself. (Fath al-Qadir)
It may also be that, since the path of guidance and faith is only one — not four or five, nor many different paths — 'Nur' has been mentioned in the singular.
[2] That is, they associate others as partners with Him.
